History

We have been making ordinary cheese special since 1934. Our family company has blossomed into one of the largest and most innovative cheese suppliers in the world.

It all started back in the early 17th century. Dirk Vergeer sold handmade cheese produced by his parents. Word quickly spread beyond Reeuwijk, and buyers would come from as far as the province of Limburg and the Achterhoek region looking for Vergeer cheese.

Cheese production stagnated during the Second World War, but in 1945 the company restarted its production at full steam. The company would buy factory-made cheese, and mature and process it before selling it at various distribution points.

The increase in self-service stores in the 1960s led to a growing demand for packaged cheese. Vergeer invested in this growing market by acquiring facilities and machines to meet the demand. The company also expanded its selection with pre-packaged slices and grated cheese.

Today we are a modern streamlined (family) company with more than 550 employees, working at our locations in Reeuwijk, Woerden en Bodegraven. We have grown into one of the largest cheese packaging companies in Europe. Our customers are located all around the world. From Europe to Asia. From Canada to the Middle East and Southern Africa. But no matter how big we are, we remain closely connected to Reeuwijk, the village where it all began. We are still a family company where the third generation now runs our dynamic business.
