Working at Vergeer
The connection between Vergeer Holland and cheese goes back centuries. As early as the 17th century, the Vergeer family in Reeuwijk was making cheese with craftsmanship and passion. Since the founding of the current company in 1934, we have grown into one of the most innovative cheese processors in Europe.
With over 550 employees at locations in Reeuwijk, Woerden, and Bodegraven, we supply cheese to customers all over the world. What started as a local family business has now become an international player, combining the strength of tradition and progress.
The origin
In 1934, Dirk Vergeer began selling the artisanal cheese made by his parents. Initially, this was in the local area, but soon also in Limburg and the Achterhoek. During the Second World War, cheese production stagnated, but in 1945 the company resumed operations at full strength. Vergeer opened distribution points at multiple locations and also started purchasing factory cheese, which was then matured and processed by Vergeer Holland.
With the rise of supermarkets and self-service stores in the 1960s, the demand for pre-packaged cheese increased significantly. It proved to be a real growth market, and Vergeer invested heavily in space and machinery. Since the 1960s, activities have further expanded to include processing cheese into slices and grated cheese.
Forget Holland today
With over 550 employees and locations in Reeuwijk, Woerden, and Bodegraven, Vergeer Holland has grown into one of the largest cheese packagers in Europe. Our cheeses find their way to customers in more than 30 countries, including Europe, Canada, the Middle East, Southern Africa, and Asia (such as China, Korea, and Japan).
We actively invest in the future. Our state-of-the-art facility in Bodegraven, completed in 2020, is equipped with advanced maturing rooms and computer-controlled processing systems. At the time, the building achieved one of the highest BREEAM scores in Europe, tangible proof of our sustainable ambitions. In short: Vergeer Holland is a company to be proud of. Rooted in tradition, driven by innovation.
Our home port
No matter how internationally we operate, our roots are firmly planted in Reeuwijk, the place where the story of Vergeer Holland began. Our head office is located here, and this is still the beating heart of our family business. The third generation is now actively involved, and the fourth is already preparing to take over. At Vergeer Holland, we build on tradition with our eyes set on the future.
